- Welcome to CodeWarrior Documentation!
- Sept 3, 1998
-
-
- * I don't want to read this note, I want information fast!
-
- Read the Release Notes for the various products! Some information in
- the documentation may not be accurate because of last minute changes
- to CodeWarrior. Refer to the Release Notes folder for this last
- minute information.
-
- The QuickStart guide in the root folder of your CodeWarrior CD-ROM
- disk will get you started. This on-line version has the latest
- information. New users and users who have purchased an update also
- get a printed version of this guide.
-
- In every manual produced by Metrowerks you'll find the Guide to
- CodeWarrior Documentation (on the back page in page-based formats).
- It explains how the documentation is structured and points you to the
- most commonly-used manuals.
-
-
- * I'm new at this, where do I go first?
-
- If you are new to programming, look in the CodeWarrior Books folder
- for a wide selection of helpful books in electronic format. If you
- find one you like, you'll probably want a real paper copy of the
- book, it's a lot easier to read and refer to as you learn.
-
- If you are new to CodeWarrior, check out these manuals.
-
- QuickStart - contains registration, installation, and updating
- information.
-
- CodeWarrior Core Tutorials - Acrobat files in slide-show format that
- walk you through the entire IDE, as well as giving you a hands-on
- look at the Project Manager, source-code Editor, and Debugger. More
- tutorials are planned for the future.
-
- Porting Guide - helps reduce frustration as you port your
- programming project from other development environments to
- CodeWarrior. This manual offers tips, hints, and guidelines for C,
- C++, Pascal, UNIX, MPW, Turbo, and THINK programmers.
-
-
- * Which documentation viewer do I use?
-
- See the About Doc Formats file for full information on the formats
- and viewers available to you for on-line interactive use, and for
- printing your own copy of the manuals.
-
-
- * What's new and different?
-
- All the documentation has been revised to reflect the many new
- features of CodeWarrior. However, within this constantly evolving
- universe of words, there are some highlights worth special notice.
-
- For new CodeWarrior users, you have a first look at the CodeWarrior Core
- Tutorials. These Acrobat-based tutorials help you become productive with
- CodeWarrior as quickly as possible. To that end, you can take a guided tour
- of CodeWarrior, as well as pursue a more detailed examination of the
- Project Manager, Editor, and Debugger. In future releases we'll have more
- tutorials on other components of the IDE. Your feedback on these early
- offerings (as on all our documentation) is welcome and encouraged.
-
- The biggest news for this release is two-fold. First, we present the first
- appearance of our online help that provides a "How do I..." topic list. We
- tried to cover most of the main questions we thought new users might be
- asking themselves. In subsequent releases we will be expanding that
- coverage to everything under the IDE. So if you find a missing task, please
- let us know. In addition, we also include a glossary of common terms used
- within the CodeWarrior documentation.
-
- We also introduce for the first time our new standard online help system
- for all of our host platforms. On Windows we will continue to use WinHelp,
- on Solaris we will be using HyperHelp, and on the Mac OS we'll use
- QuickHelp. Each of these online help systems allow us to present our help
- in a consistant manner no matter which host you are using. Give them a try
- and let us know what you think. In the future we hope to convert to HTML
- formatted help as the tools become stable enough to use.
-
-
- * I want paper manuals!
-
- All relevant CodeWarrior documentation for your product is available
- in electronic format on the CodeWarrior CD. However, Metrowerks
- publishes much of its documentation in printed form.
-
- In the past, we put the most popular documentation into two huge
- Inside CodeWarrior manuals, one for the Windows-hosted tools and one
- for the Mac-hosted tools. These 2,000-page monsters typically had
- some of the manuals you wanted, and some that you didn't.
-
- Starting with CodeWarrior Professional Release 2, we are reorganizing
- our manuals into smaller, more useful books. There will be more books,
- but you may need to buy fewer because you can focus on what you need.
- The price for each book has gone down as well! Check out the Metrowerks
- web site at http://www.metrowerks.com for pricing details.
-
- The new book lineup works out like this:
-
- Inside CodeWarrior: Core Tools
- - IDE User Guide
- - Debugger User Guide
- - Error Reference
-
- Inside CodeWarrior: C/C++ Tools
- - C Compilers Reference
- - MSL C Reference
-
- Inside CodeWarrior: Pascal Tools
- - Pascal Compilers Reference
- - Pascal Library Reference
- - Pascal Language Reference
-
- Inside CodeWarrior: Targeting Win32 and Java
- - Targeting Win32
- - Targeting Java
-
- Inside CodeWarrior: Targeting Mac OS and Java
- - Targeting Mac OS
- - Targeting Java
- - ZoneRanger Manual
-
- For PowerPlant documentation, the same volume we used for CodeWarrior
- 11 is still in print and current. There will be no reprint for
- CodeWarrior Professional 2. You should use the current electronic
- version of PowerPlant Advanced Topics if you are looking for
- information on the PowerPlant network or internet classes.
-
- Inside CodeWarrior: PowerPlant Essentials
- - The PowerPlant Book
- - Constructor for PowerPlant
-
- For details on what's inside these and all other Metrowerks manuals,
- see the Doc Descriptions file. It provides an overview of all the
- documentation, and descriptions of each specific manual.
-
-
- * Obsolete Documentation
-
- As the technological leading edge moves on, some things become
- obsolete. We recognize that even though a particular technology has
- been abandoned, you may still want to use it. We continue to provide
- documentation on these technologies. The following manual has been
- classed as obsolete, although you can still find it in the
- documentation directory.
-
- - PowerPlant PowerTalk Reference (Acrobat format)
-
- On the other hand, some manuals are replaced or rendered unnecessary.
- IN that case, we discontinue the manual complete. Manuals no longer
- included on the Reference CD are:
-
- - C++ Library Reference (QuickView format) - referred to the
- obsolete ANSI C++ library
-
- - PowerPlant Core Reference - replaced by PowerPlant Revealed
-
-
- * Help! I can't find what I'm looking for.
-
- Read the Documentation Description file to see if you can locate the
- manual covering your area of interest.
-
- Contact Metrowerks Technical Support (support@metrowerks.com). E-mail
- forms for reporting bugs, questions, and suggestions are in the
- Release Notes folder.
-
